Plant Biology
Grad Research Enhancement Fund

The Plant Biology Graduate Research Enhancement Fund (PlBio GREF) was established in 2011 by Department Head Feng Sheng Hu to provide support for Plant Biology graduate students seeking to gain access to expertise important for their research but unavailable on the Urbana campus.

Deadlines: Last Friday in October & First Friday in February

Funding Criteria: The PlBio GREF will provide support to graduate students working in Plant Biology laboratories, at any stage of their graduate programs:
  1. to travel to a course or workshop
  2. to visit another laboratory to acquire a skill or collaborate with a researcher to enhance graduate research
  3. to attend a conference at which a talk or poster is to be presented
Priority is given to (1) and (2) but also to requests intended to match awards from the SIB Enhancement Fund, as priority in those awards is given to those for which matching funds from the home department have been requested or promised.

Award amounts: The fund will provide a maximum of $1500 in total awards in each of the Fall and Spring semesters. No maximum or minimum amount per award is specified, although ~$500 per award is a reasonable guideline.

Application: Submit your completed application form by email to plants@life.illinois.edu or Jennifer Barnhart (jbarnhar@illinois.edu). Award decisions will be made as quickly as possible by the department's Graduate Affairs Committee.
