The 2019 LAS Alumni Humanitarian Award recipient is Alison Kirby. The LAS Alumni Humanitarian Award is given to LAS alumni who, through outstanding leadership or service, demonstrate the values derived from a liberal arts and sciences education by significantly improving or enhancing the lives of others. Alison graduated in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She was a general practitioner in Walla Walla, Washington, when she learned about a lack of healthcare for children at Lincoln High School, an alternative school in Walla Walla. In response, Kirby established The Health Center at Lincoln, a full-service, mostly volunteer-run health clinic that provides free care to students in the area. Kirby’s vision has reached five other schools in the community. The clinic and school have drawn nationwide attention, being featured in “Paper Tigers,” a documentary about Lincoln High School directed by Robert Redford’s son, Jamie.
