  • We provide Prospective and Admitted students our insight and experience on being a University of Illinois Biology student through Office of Admissions Events
  • We assist underclassmen in the transition to Illinois as a mentor to first-year students.

The Roles of an IB Peer Leader
Body

The Integrative Biology Peer Leaders serves a multi-purpose in IB: advisory and recruiting. Being an IB Peer Leader would allow you to take part in a unique opportunity to shape the direction of the School through regular access and interaction with professionals in the department.

Additionally, there are many events throughout the year in which IB Peer Leaders play a vital role in the recruitment of prospective high school students or prospective majors on campus. During these recruitment events, IB Peer Leaders will be speaking individually with prospective students or participating in a student panel for a small group of prospective students and their parents.

This past year we have added additional opportunities to the role including two paid positions. IB Advising Desk Clerk and IB Peer Advisor. These positions are paid hourly and serve as the face of the IB Advising Office. The IB Peer Advisors work one two hour shift M-F advising first and second year students on course selection for the following semester and offering peer mentorship and advice.

FInally, the most exciting, rewarding, and important role an IB Peer Leader plays if they so choose, is as a mentor to first year students. They work with 1-3 first year students as a group or individually depending on the IB Peer Leader's preference. They build a relationship with the first year students and answer questions about campus, IB Classes, resources, how to succeed, and get involved on campus. The relationship is really what you make it.

IB Peer Leaders are IB and IB Honors majors who have a variety of career goals and out of the classroom experiences. We meet as a group 2-3 times a semester and there are a couple handful of recruiting events throughout each semester.
