Employer: Johns Hopkins University
Arik is heavily involved in healthcare, research, mentorship, and teaching. Arik received his bachelor’s degree from the Integrative Biology Honors program in 1986, which provided him a rigorous foundation in Biology and taught him about investigate inquiry. He went on to medical school and now practices as an Adolescent Medicine Pediatrician and Public Health Practitioner and Researcher. He is currently a professor at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health, and is extremely passionate about adolescent sexual and reproductive health and access to care, especially for male adolescents and young adults. Arik teaches Masculinity, Sexual Behavior & Health, which is one of the first courses on men’s health offered in a public health school in the nation.
Aside from practicing as a provider and providing mentorship and knowledge of the field to train a diverse and excellent new generation of scholars in the field, Arik is commited to research. Arik focuses on creating clinical care touchpoints to support adolescent and young adult males in their sexual and reproductive health and expectant fathers in their new role as fathers – populations who have historically received little attention in medicine and public health and as a result have experienced unmet needs.
Arik is extremely successful in his field, receiving numerous teaching excellence awards for his course, and thanks to the IB degree, he was able to jump-start such success: “It gave me the confidence I needed to matriculate into an intensive medical school curriculum”
Arik would be a great person to talk to if you are interested in medical school, public health, pediatrics, male health, and teaching. Contact Christina Swanson at alumnimentor@sib.illinois.edu if you would like to connect with Arik!
