Our mission & vision.
The mission of the School of Integrative Biology (SIB) is to promote teaching, research, and public engagement directed toward understanding the mechanisms of organismal function, and the evolution and ecology of organisms. The School pursues this focus through a philosophy that integrates across levels of biological organization, from molecular mechanisms to ecosystem levels. It seeks excellence and national visibility for its programs emphasizing research on all forms of biodiversity, including animals, fungi, microbes, and plants. The educational approach is one of inclusion, where breadth of training is paramount. In preparation for careers in science, technology, health sciences, education, or public service, students will achieve proficiency in analytical and quantitative methods as well as a thorough understanding of the paradigms and theories of modern biology. The School is a community committed to scholarship, community engagement, and leadership that dismantles systems that use power, privilege, or violence to disenfranchise, diminish, and destroy.

This approach opens a broad array of opportunities, from research and healthcare to education, conservation, policy, and beyond, as illustrated by our alumni who are making an impact in fields across the globe.
Our faculty lead cutting-edge research that is celebrated worldwide in fields ranging from animals and plants to insects, fungi, and microbes. Despite their global prominence, they prioritize teaching and mentorship for all students. Students are invited to participate in this work through hands-on research, field experiences, and interdisciplinary learning that strengthen analytical and quantitative skills while grounding them in the core concepts of modern biology. These experiences prepare students to think critically, solve complex problems, and engage with the biological challenges facing society.
