Mira Mclain

Mira graduated from the Integrative Biology major in 2021 and the UIUC Master’s of Health Administration in 2023. “To say I recommend the MHA path is an understatement!”

Mira started out as pre-med, and continued to explore careers in healthcare throughout undergrad.   Even after getting accepted to OT school, she was still unsure  of what direction she wanted to take.  Luckily, she was introduced to MHA and loved that  there were so many different opportunities to explore within healthcare.  In health administration she gets to  work directly with practitioners and healthcare systems to find and interpret underlying issues within the healthcare team/area and work with the  practitioners to develop innovative solutions.  She gets to find patterns and create a meaningful story from it (without working in heavy stats or R) to develop interventions – for example saving patients money or making the patient more central to the care.   There are MHA programs and careers that can be more focused on business or analytics, but even without a business background Mira felt very prepared to be successful in her program.  Though if you have time, Mira does suggest classes in leadership, finance, and medical terminology.

The Carle Health Administrative Fellowship is a one-year post-graduate opportunity that provides a broad range of experiences in hospital operations, health plan management, physician group practice administration, and a variety of corporate support functions including health care finance, quality improvement, and strategic planning.

“MHA is a great way to dip your toes into healthcare if you don’t know where you want to go”
