a blonde woman in a dress standing in front of a fountain

Winner: Sonya Luebbers

Sonya is a sophomore double majoring in Integrative Biology and Geology. Having been raised on a homestead, she grew up with many animals of many different species — cats, dogs, rabbits, budgies, cockatiels, chickens, pigs, turkeys, ducks, and geese. Even more numerous to name are all the wild things she saw while playing outside, even of the disliked, creepy crawly type. Sonya was interested in what they were called, what they ate, how they lived, and in the “why” of all those answers. She knew she wanted to do something involving the life sciences before she even had a clear understanding of what science was.

A smiling redhead in glasses and a black shirt

Winner: Elizabeth Hurley

Research is an opportunity to explore the vast knowledge that the world has to offer: to ask, answer, and understand questions that may or may not have an evolutionary basis. This evolutionary way that life was formed has both a scientific and theoretical basis, but nobody can fully understand why. Research offers plausible explanations, backed by observation and sound intuition; however, what’s wonderful about research is that there is always a window for error.

Elizabeth hopes to complete research to formulate and answer the very questions the universe has to offer.
