Employer: University of Illinois Extension
Sreelakshmi earned a Master's Degree in Entomology from the University of Illinois in 2024. They currently work as a Horticulture Extension Educator for the University of Illinois Extension. In this role, they support Illinois residents in connecting with nature by answering local constituent questions, leading educational programming, and contributing to state-wide initiatives aimed at public education and environmental support.
Sreelakshmi's experience in Integrative Biology has been instrumental in securing their current position and has connected them with researchers globally. The knowledge and skills gained during their studies continue to shape their professional contributions to horticulture and public engagement.
Sreelakshmi emphasized the critical role that support, and community played in their graduate school journey at the University of Illinois. They attribute their success to the resources provided by the Gender & Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC) and other cultural houses on campus, which were essential in helping them navigate the challenges of graduate school. The university's support of their culture and identity was a defining aspect of their U of I experience.
Sreelakshmi is eager to connect with current IB students and help them through their graduate school journey. Contact Christina Swanson at alumnimentor@sib.illinois.edu if you would like to connect.
