Thomas Gillespie earned a Bachelor's Degree in Ecology, Ethology, and Evolution from the University of Illinois in 1996. He continued his education at the University of Florida, where he obtained an MS in 1999 and a PhD in 2004.
Thomas is a disease ecologist and currently serves as Professor and Chair of Environmental Sciences at Emory University. He is renowned for his integrative approach to biodiversity conservation and the mitigation of emerging infectious diseases. Gillespie was one of the first to demonstrate how human impact on the environment can alter pathogen dynamics in wildlife, creating opportunities for pathogens to jump between species. His work exemplifies the One Health Approach, guiding international efforts to protect endangered species from human diseases and prevent future pandemics.
Thomas credits his foundational training in Integrative Biology for shaping his professional journey. The knowledge and skills he gained during his time at the University of Illinois have been critical in his research and teaching careers.
Thomas has maintained a strong connection with the University of Illinois, most recently returning as a keynote speaker for the Sesquicentennial Symposium on April 11, 2018. More details about his work and contributions can be found on his Emory University profile and his keynote address on One Health.
