The School of Integrative Biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is proud to announce that Dr. Andrew Suarez, Acting Head and Professor of Entomology, has been named the 2025 recipient of the Distinguished Naturalist Award from the American Society of Naturalists (ASN).

Established in 1997, the Distinguished Naturalist Award recognizes a mid-career scientist whose research significantly enhances our understanding of natural systems, while also deepening public and scientific appreciation of natural history. The award honors those whose work bridges fundamental evolutionary biology with a commitment to the natural world.

Dr. Suarez’s  research on ants has illuminated the ecological, evolutionary, and biomechanical dimensions of one of the planet’s most behaviorally complex and ecologically critical insect groups. His work on invasive species—particularly tropical fire ants and Argentine ants—has revealed the evolutionary drivers behind their global success. He has also pioneered biomechanical studies of trap-jaw ants, reshaping how scientists understand the evolution of speed and power in the animal kingdom.

In addition to his research, Dr. Suarez is celebrated for his dedication to field biology, mentorship, and public engagement. He has led global field courses, mentored students from historically underrepresented backgrounds, and shared the wonder of science through outreach and media.

Dr. Suarez’s career exemplifies the spirit of the Distinguished Naturalist Award and reaffirms the essential role of naturalists in advancing evolutionary biology today.
